Premier Li stresses scientific research to win battle against virus

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang Sunday (February 9) stressed the role of scientific research to win the battle against the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and head of the leading group of the CPC Central Committee on the prevention and control of the epidemic, made the remarks while inspecting the Institute of Pathogen Biology at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

After hearing reports on the updates of the research on the prevention and control of the epidemic, Li expressed acknowledgement to the researchers' dedication and hard work.

Noting that it takes both nationwide action and scientific support to battle the virus, Li called for efforts to mobilize the best scientific research resources to tackle the most urgent challenges in epidemic prevention and control.

Li asked researchers to communicate with the public with their authoritative knowledge on how the virus is transmitted and other issues of public concern to facilitate scientific prevention and control.

Stressing the important role of effective drugs in curing patients and reducing mortality, Li urged researchers to "race against time" to pool wisdom and study treatments of cured cases in all-out research efforts on effective drugs.

Li also stressed respecting science and scientific rules in drug and vaccine research to ensure safety and effectiveness.

* China's National Health Commission Monday (February 10) said it received reports of 3,062 new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection and 97 deaths on Sunday from 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.

* By the end of Sunday, a total of 908 people had died of the disease and 40,171 confirmed cases had been reported on the Chinese mainland.

* A total of 3,281 infected patients had been discharged from hospital after recovery by the end of Sunday.

* New confirmed cases of novel coronavirus pneumonia outside Hubei Province totaled 444 on Sunday, dropping for six consecutive days.

* The hardest-hit Hubei Province reported 2,618 new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection and 91 new deaths on Sunday. Its capital city of Wuhan, center of the epidemic, reported 1,921 new infections and 73 new deaths.

* A renovation project of isolation wards of Wuhan-based Tongji Hospital was completed on Sunday, which is expected to provide 800 beds for severe cases of novel coronavirus infection.

* To protect people's health and avoid the risk of cross infection caused by gatherings, the city of Lhasa, capital of Tibet, will not hold large-scale traditional religious activities during the Tibetan New Year, which falls on February 24 this year.
