At least 45 people were killed and 37 others injured on September 11 after a bus which they were travelling in skidded off the mountainous road and fell into a gorge in southern Indian state of Telangana, officials said.

The accident took place near Shanivarapet village of Jagtiyal district, about 176 km north of Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana.

"Today in a tragic road accident, a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation bus carrying 80 passengers fell into deep gorge here," B Rajesham, joint collector Jagtiyal told Xinhua over telephone. "Forty three people were killed in the accident and 37 injured have been removed to different hospitals in the district for treatment."

According to Rajesham, the ill-fated bus was returning from Kondagattu to Jagtiyal.

Officials said the victims were Hindu pilgrims who had visited Anjaneya Swamy temple in Kondagattu.

Following the accident, locals informed police, who along with disaster response force personnel rushed to the spot to carry rescue work of removing injured to hospitals and retrieving bodies from the gorge.

It is suspected that the accident might have took place due to failure of brakes, said a source.

Police have registered a case and initiated investigations into the accident.
