NDO – The second summit between the top leaders of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States (US) has attracted wide attention from the whole world over the past few days. That Hanoi was selected to host the event has affirmed Vietnam’s growing prestige in the international arena. Vietnam has strived to organise the meeting in an effective, thorough and respectful manner. Once again, Vietnam has made significant contributions to strengthening trust and striving for a sustainable peace in Asia and throughout the world.

The second DPRK-USA Hanoi Summit concluded without reaching an agreement on important issues related to sanctions and the denuclearisation process. Addressing a press conference after the meeting, US President Donald Trump said that although he and Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK Kim Jong Un had a good and constructive dialogue, the two sides could not come to any agreements due to disagreements over the issue of removing the US embargo against the DPRK. The US leader stated that the DPRK requested the removal of US sanctions before the dismantling of its nuclear facilities, but the US did not agree. The two leaders expressed their wish to continue meeting in the future.

Although the DPRK-USA Summit couldn't reach an agreement or issue a joint statement, the international public recognised and highly appreciated the efforts of the two parties as they had travelled a long way to the negotiating table in Hanoi. Not only is this a great success for Vietnam, it also shows the country’s increasing prestige and position in the international arena, while affirming the success of Vietnam’s diplomacy in strengthening trust and consolidating friendship and cooperation with countries around the world. The organisation of such an important event has affirmed Vietnam’s determination in implementing its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralism and diversification of international relations, active and proactive international integration, and being a trusted, responsible partner of the international community.

With the drastic directions of senior leaders, Vietnam has successfully fulfilled its role as the host of the summit. The meeting was ensured with absolute security and safety. The reception took place respectfully and thoughtfully, showing the hospitality and friendliness of the Vietnamese people. Hanoi city was clean and beautiful, and was decorated with brilliant, impressive lights, flags and flowers, making it worthy of the title of “City for Peace”.
