Top leader offers incense to President Ho Chi Minh

General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong offered incense to commemorate President Ho Chi Minh at House 67 in President Ho’s relic site at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi on February 2, on the occasion the 90th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s founding (February 3, 1930-2020).

On the same day, General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong chaired a meeting with former senior leaders of the Party and State in Hanoi, during which he attributed the achievements in different fields so far to the attainments during the more than 30 years of reform upheld and to the solidarity and unanimity in the whole Party, people and army promoted.

He also expressed his hope that the former Party and State leaders, with their capacity and experience, will give more sincere and responsible opinions for the common cause of the Party and nation.

Vietnam successfully fulfils role as President of UNSC in January

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam’s mission to the UN, chaired a session on January 31 to review the activities of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in January, the month in which Vietnam held the Presidency of the UNSC.

During the month under the presidency of Vietnam, the UNSC held 30 official activities, including two open debates, eight sessions to listen to reports and four sessions to approve resolutions, which were broadcast live on the UN’s media system.

As UNSC president, Vietnam also held an international press conference and many press briefings on the council’s work. The council adopted 13 decisions, including four resolutions and a decision on extending the mandate of UN missions, forces and mechanisms, one declaration of the UNSC President, five press statements and two press releases.

Vietnam seeks to prevent spread of new coronavirus

Vietnam is taking a wide range of measures to contain the spread of the new coronavirus (nCoV), with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc declaring it an epidemic.

In the northern province of Quang Ninh, which borders China, local authorities have decided to establish a temporary 500-bed hospital in the city of Mong Cai to prepare for the epidemic.

Schools in Hanoi have been disinfected and sanitised while many opening ceremonies of spring festivals have been cancelled as a precautionary measure against the virus.

In a related development, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has suspended the licensing of all flights between Vietnam and China starting from February 1 until further notice.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism has recommended to postpone or cancel traditional festivals which have yet to start, and to reduce the scale and duration of those festivals which have already begun.

Tree-planting festival launched in localities nationwide

The 2020 tree-planting festival was launched in various localities across the country over the past week.

The festival is observed nationwide every spring to highlight the country’s traditional custom which was initiated by President Ho Chi Minh in the hope of greenifying the country.

Tree-planting is also a practical event that will contribute to increasing the country’s forest cover rate to 42% in 2020 and turn Vietnam into a leading country of production and export of plantation timber.

Another Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument inaugurated

A Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument was inaugurated in the Cambodian province of Kampong Cham on January 28. This is the 17th out of 22 friendship monuments to be upgraded and built across Cambodia.

In her remarks, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An affirmed the significance of Cambodia-Vietnam friendship monuments in Cambodian cities and provinces.

She said that with the wholehearted support of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers, the patriotic Cambodians defeated the Pol Pot genocidal regime and revived the country, noting that the inauguration is more meaningful as it takes place at a time when the Cambodian Government and people are celebrating the 41st anniversary of the victory (January 7).

Foreign arrivals to Vietnam surge by 32.8% in January

The number of foreign visitors to Vietnam in January is estimated to have expand 16.6% month-on-month and 32.8% year-on-year, reaching 1.99 million, announced the General Statistics Office (GSO) on January 29.

This marked the highest figure to date, due to high travel demand for the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.

Of the total amount of people travelling, those arriving by air travel increased by 38.9%, while arrivals by sea rose by 231.5%.

Vietnamese weightlifters claim 10 gold medals at Rome World Cup

Vietnam’s weightlifters bagged 10 gold medals within the two competition days of the recent 2020 Weightlifting World Cup in Rome, according to the Vietnam Sports Administration.

On January 29, Hoang Thi Duyen won three golds in the women’s 59kg category in the snatch, clean and jerk and total events with 97kg, 116kg and 213kg, respectively. Meanwhile, Thach Kim Tuan earned three golds in the men’s 61kg on January 28, thus strengthening his position among Asia’s top eight and his bid for an Olympic berth.

Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan also triumphed at the men’s 55kg event with three gold medals while Khong My Phuong clinched one gold with a snatch of 73kg in the women’s 45kg.

Next up, Vietnamese weightlifters will compete at the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships, the final qualifying round for the Games slated for April in Kazakhstan.
