NDO – Following are the notable events that made headlines over the past week selected by Nhan Dan Online.

State funeral held for former President, General Le Duc Anh

Delegates from the Party, National Assembly, State, Government, and Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) along with officers and soldiers of the armed forces, Party members, and people from localities nationwide gathered at the National Funeral Hall, No.5 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi since early on the morning of May 3 to pay their last respects to the former State leader who devoted his whole life to the national revolutionary cause.

General Le Duc Anh, who served as President of Vietnam from September 1992 to December 1997, passed away on April 22 at the age of 99. Vietnam declared two days of national mourning for him on May 3 and 4.

Flag hoisted at Ben Hai River to mark anniversary of reunification

A national flag was raised at a tower near the Ben Hai River in Quang Tri province on April 30 during an annual ceremony to mark the 44th anniversary of national reunification.

During the Vietnam War, the Ben Hai River was the natural landmark that separated northern and southern Vietnam and the Hien Luong Bridge crossing the river was a symbol of the agony of partition and the aspiration for reunification.

Vietnam maintains trade surplus in first four months of 2019

Vietnam maintained a trade surplus of US$711 million in the first four months of this year, much lower than US$3.7 billion recorded in the same period in 2018.

According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, total import and export turnover in the first four months of 2019 was estimated at US$156.8 billion, of which exports reached US$78.8 billion, up 5.8% over the same period last year, and imports were at US$78 billion, up 10.4%.

Major solar power complex and renewable energy project inaugurated in Ninh Thuan

A solar power complex with a total capacity of 330MWp, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, was inaugurated at a ceremony held on April 27 by Vietnamese BIM Group in Phuoc Minh commune, Thuan Nam district, Ninh Thuan province, with the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam.

Under the VND 7 trillion (US$301.3 million) project, more than 1 million solar panels were installed at the plants, together with other advanced technologies, expecting to contribute 600 million kWh to the national grid and benefit 200,000 households yearly.

Special art programme marks National Reunification Day

An art programme entitled “Aspiration for Unification” was held at the historical relic site of Hien Luong Bridge, in Quang Tri province on the evening of April 29, by Nhan Dan newspaper, Vietnamese News Agency and the People’s Committee of Quang Tri province.

The special event aimed to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory, the 44th anniversary of Southern Liberation and National Reunification and the 47th anniversary of the Liberation of Quang Tri province.

Hoi An among Top 2019 summer travel destinations

The famous travel website Travel Triangle has listed Hoi An in the central coastal province of Quang Nam among its Top 4 world’s best 2019 summer travel destinations.

The ancient town is ranked fourth on the list, just behind Zermatt (Switzerland), Paros (Greece) and Seychelles (East Africa). According to Travel Triangle, Hoi An is the most perfect old city in the world. Many ancient architectural works have been preserved. This place attracts tourists for its attractive "map" of famous dishes such as bread, high soils, and noodles.

Vietnamese film to premiere at Cannes Film Fest

“Hay Thuc Tinh va San Sang” (Stay Awake, Be Ready) by Pham Thien An will premiere in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Directors' Fortnight), an independent section held in parallel with the Cannes Film Festival in France in May.

The 14-minute film will also compete in the section’s Illy Awards with nine films from other countries. The movie features a motorcycle accident in front of a street food stall. The incident unveils a secret story involving three young men.

Vietnam qualify for Asian U-19 Women's Championship

Vietnam have qualified for the 2019 Asian U-19 Women's Championship, to be held in Thailand later this year with the participation of eight teams.

Vietnam scored an equaliser in the 71st minute with a close-range finish by Tuyet Ngan but the balance was tipped in the visiting team’s favour once more with a second goal, by Kim Soo Jin, more than ten minutes later, sealing a 2-1 victory for the Republic of Korea. Other teams qualifying for the Asian U-19 Women's Championship are Thailand, Japan, the DPRK, China, Australia and Myanmar.
