Vietnam becomes member of UN Commission on International Trade Law

Vietnam has become a member of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) for the first time, singing up for a six-year term.

The Southeast Asian country won 157 out of 193 votes at an election during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the US, on December 17.

The success in the election shows the country’s rising international prestige and is recognition of the country’s efforts and contributions to the common tasks of the international community.

A conference on the National Assembly and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was jointly organised by the Vietnamese National Assembly, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the UN Development Programme in the central city of Da Nang on December 17-18.

The conference focused discussions on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the role of the parliament, the introduction of Self-Assessment Toolkit for Parliaments and sustainable development goals.

A wide range of issues were also discussed at the event, such as climate change adaptation, poverty reduction and elimination, food security guarantees, sustainable agriculture development, gender equality, and female and youth empowerment.

Vietnam named Asia’s hottest investment destination: Forbes

An article published by US magazine Forbes has recently considered Vietnam as the hottest investment destination in Asia.

According to the article, Vietnam attracted US$17 billion in FDI commitments last year, arguably the largest amount for an emerging market relative to its US$250 billion GDP, the magazine said.

In the first quarter of 2018, it became the fourth largest Initial Public Offering market in the region, surpassing the Republic of Korea (RoK), Singapore and Australia. The realty market in Ho Chi Minh City is booming and GDP is growing at around 7% per annum.

Nghi Son oil refinery-petrochemical plant begins commercial operations

The Nghi Son oil refinery and petrochemical plant in the north central province of Thanh Hoa officially began its commercial operations on December 23, marking a breakthrough development in the country’s oil refinery-petrochemical sector

The project, which has been carried out since 2013, is invested in by PetroVietnam (25.1%), Kuwait Petroleum International (35.1%), and Japanese firms Idemitsui Kosan (35.1%) and Mitsui Chemicals (4.7%).

With a total investment capital of nearly US$9.3 billion, the plant is a world-class deep processing petrochemical complex, using the most advanced technology, with a full capacity of 200,000 barrels of crude oil per day in the first phase.

Vietnam holds nationwide cyber-attack drill

One hundred teams from across Vietnam took part in the biggest ever cyber-attack drill, which ran in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City from December 18 to 21.

Co-organised by the Authority of Information Security and the Vietnam Computer Emergency Response Team (VNCERT), the drill updated public technicians on solutions to prevent and counter advanced persistent threats (APT), while equipping them with the skills and knowledge to prepare for real-life attacks on important national information infrastructure.

A wide variety of meaningful activities were held throughout the country over the past week to commemorate the 74th founding anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Army (December 22, 1944-2018) and the 29th anniversary of the All-people Defence Festival.

Arts performances, exhibitions and gatherings were organised by local authorities to honour the glorious traditions of the Vietnam People’s Army and fuel national pride and patriotism among the armed forces and people.

Vietnamese embassies abroad also hosted ceremonies to mark the occasion, during which participants reviewed the remarkable feats of arms and contributions of the Vietnam People’s Army to national construction and defence over the past 74 years.

Quang Ninh hosts 15 millionth foreign tourist to Vietnam

James Kopenec, a US citizen, has become the 15 millionth foreign tourist to visit Vietnam, as he arrived in Ha Long City, in the northern province of Quang Ninh, on December 19.

Upon Kopenec’s arrival at the Ha Long international port, a special welcome ceremony was held for him and the other two lucky guests, who came from the cruise before and after him – Annita De Vriesere from Belgium and Masahiko Nagaishi from Japan, respectively.

The event lays the basis for the tourism sector’s bid to become a spearheaded economic sector.

Vietnam’s H'Hen Nie among Miss Universe 2018 top 5

H’Hen Nie, the Vietnamese representative at Miss Universe 2018, finished in the top five of the beauty pageant during the final round which took place in Thailand on December 17. It is Vietnam’s best ever performance in the Miss Universe pageant.

H’Hen Nie, a 25-year-old model from the Ede ethnic minority group in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, was crowned Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 in January.

Catriona Gray from the Philippines was crowned Miss Universe 2018. Contestants from South Africa and Venezuela were the pageant’s first and second runners-up, respectively.

Vietnam remains in FIFA top 100

Vietnam’s national men’s football team has maintained 100th spot in the latest FIFA rankings released on December 20.

Though their ranking remained unchanged, Vietnam gained five more points over the previous month to earn a total of 1,229 points.

As Vietnam didn’t record a loss during the 2018 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup, they continue to hold the number one place in the Southeast Asian region, followed by the Philippines (globally ranked No. 116) and Thailand (No. 118).

Nguyen Quang Hai wins Vietnamese Golden Ball Award 2018

21-year-old midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai has received the Vietnamese Golden Ball Award 2018 for his excellent performance at the AFF Cup and the AFC U23 Championship. The Silver and Bronze Balls went to Nguyen Anh Duc (Binh Duong) and Phan Van Duc (Song Lam Nghe An).

Hai has also been named as one of the most anticipated young stars at the 2019 Asian Cup, which is set to run from January 5 to February 1 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In the female category, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung (Phong Phu Ha Nam) won the Golden Ball, while the Golden Ball went to Vu Quoc Hung (Hai Phuong Nam) in futsal.
