PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc pays visits to New Zealand, Australia

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his spouse paid official visits to New Zealand from March 12-14 and Australia from March 14-18.

In New Zealand, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc held talks with PM Jacinda Ardern and witnessed the signing of several cooperation documents, as well as meeting with Speaker of the House of Representatives Trevor Mallard and holding a phone conversation with Governor-General of New Zealand Dame Patsy Reddy.

He also met with Mayor of Auckland Phil Goff and attended the Vietnam-New Zealand Business Forum, among other activities.

During his visit to Australia, the PM held talks with PM Malcolm Turnbull and they signed the Joint Statement on establishing the Vietnam – Australia Strategic Partnership.

He also met with Governor-General of Australia Peter Cosgrove, President of the Senate Scott Ryan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tony Smith.

Notably, the PM attended the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit in Sydney, among others.

Former PM Phan Van Khai passes away

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), the National Assembly, the President, the Government, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) issued a special announcement on the death of former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

Comrade Phan Van Khai passed away at 1.30 am on March 17, 2018, at his home in Tan Thong Hoi commune, Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City, due to ailment and old age, according to the announcement.

A State funeral will be held for him on March 20-21.

National Press Festival takes place in Hanoi

The 2018 National Press Festival took place in Hanoi from March 16-18, featuring a total of 73 booths by 55 news agencies, press training facilities, and press equipment companies from around the country.

The festival also featured numerous activities, including forums, seminars and exhibitions.

International Francophonie Day marked in Hanoi

A function was held in Hanoi on March 16 to mark the International Francophonie Day (March 20).

Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc highlighted Vietnam’s efforts and practical contributions to the common development of the Francophonie community, as well as to promoting the image of the French language in the region.

First lung transplant performed successfully in Vietnam

The first lung transplant in Vietnam has been successfully performed at the Military Hospital 108 on a male patient with respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The surgery was directed by the hospital’s Director, Prof., Dr. Mai Hong Bang. Two foreign experts from France and Belgium, along with 60 medical staff from the hospital, directly performed the eight-hour surgery.

Fashion week celebrates 45 years of Vietnam-Italy diplomatic ties

The Vietnam-Italy Autumn-Winter Fashion Week took place in Hanoi from March 14-19, as part of the activities to mark 45 years of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.

During the week, a show of the latest collections of 18 Vietnamese and Italian designers, an exhibition highlighting the process of making traditional Vietnamese silk and a concert attracted a large number of visitors.

Over 1,000 people join walk in response to Earth Hour campaign

More than 1,000 people join a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake as part of activities in the lead-up to Earth Hour 2018.

More than 1,000 people walked along the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake, in central Hanoi on March 17, to raise awareness on saving energy and environmental protection, as part of the Earth Hour campaign.

Earth Hour 2018 is scheduled to see the lights turned off in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and various other cities throughout Vietnam, from 20h30 to 21h30 on March 24.

Vietnam U16s came second at Japan-ASEAN football tournament

Vietnam’s U16s were denied the triumph of lifting the overall trophy at the 2018 Japan-ASEAN Youth Football Tournament after falling to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Indonesia’s U16s in the final match on March 12.

Despite their disappointment, the tournament helped the players to gain valuable experience in preparation for their AFC U16 Championship campaign in Malaysia this September.
