President joins ethnic groups at Hanoi spring festival

President Tran Dai Quang joined 200 representatives of 21 ethnic groups from around the country for the opening ceremony of the annual spring festival at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism in Son Tay district, Hanoi on February 24.

The delegates include village patriarchs and heads, intellectuals, and artisans from 14 cities and provinces nationwide, including Ha Giang, Nghe An, Ninh Thuan, Thua Thien – Hue, and Dak Lak.

At the event, the State leader planted a tree in a Muong ethnic village and attended the Gau Tao festival of the Mong ethnic group in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang.

PM urges prompt resumption of work following Tet holiday

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc (C) requires the prompt resumption of work immediately after Tet.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has requested the prompt resumption of work immediately after the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, ending the dated ideology that the first lunar month is solely a time for festivals.

Speaking at a meeting between the Government’s standing board and related ministries and sectors on February 21, he asked functional ministries and agencies to keep close watch on the macro economic situation, prices and market fluctuations in order to maintain macro-economic stability and control inflation.

He requested Cabinet members to monitor the situation in fields and units under their management and urged continued administrative procedure reform and improvement of the investment and business environment to stimulate production activities, in line with the motto of the Government in 2018.

Vietnam elected as Chair of Group of Francophone Ambassadors

Vietnam was elected as Chair of the Group of Francophone Ambassadors (GAF) in Switzerland for 2018 during the 8th meeting of the group in Bern on February 19.

At the meeting, Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Hai Bang pledged that Vietnam will work hard for the development of the GAF, while connecting members of the International Organisation of Francophone (OIF).

The GAF groups more than 60 ambassadors from embassies of countries in Bern and permanent missions to the United Nations in Geneva who are members or observers of the OIF.

Report: Positive outlook for Vietnam’s FMCG sector

Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) are expected to have another year of strong growth in 2018 and rise by 6-7% over the previous year, according to a Kantar Worldpanel report on Vietnam’s FMCG market.

The report pointed out that the FMCG market showed improvement in four large cities (Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang and Can Tho) and in rural areas in the fourth quarter of last year.

For the duration of 2017, the urban market strengthened its performance while the rural market picked up but is not yet stable.

Foreign investors pledge US$1.25 billion in January

Foreign companies pledged to invest nearly US$1.25 billion in Vietnam in January, according to Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

In January, disbursement of foreign direct investment (FDI) rose 10.5% to US$1.05 billion from the same month last year, official data showed.

Of the 125 countries and territories with FDI projects in Vietnam, the Republic of Korea is the largest investor with US$58.1 billion, followed by Japan, Singapore, Taiwan (China), British Virgin Islands and Hong Kong (China).

Localities nationwide launch Lunar New Year tree planting festival

Many provinces and cities across Vietnam have simultaneously held the annual New Year tree planting festival, an event which takes place during the first few days of the Lunar New Year, initiated by President Ho Chi Minh in 1960.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, last year, Vietnam planted over 235,000 hectares of forest and involved people in the management of about 6.1 million hectares of forest, bringing the total area of forests in the country to 41.45%.

The number of violations of the Law on Forest Protection and Development has been reduced by 23% and losses caused by deforestation fell by 68% in comparison to 2016.

Vietnam participates in Asia’s largest street festival in Singapore

An art delegation from Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City Light Music Centre joined the 2018 Chingay Parade celebrating the Lunar New Year in Singapore, which drew the participation of more than 6,000 performers.

The annual festival, held at the Formula One Pit building near the Singapore Flyer Ferris wheel on February 23-24 and China Town on February 25, is a highly-anticipated event and also the largest street performance and parade in Asia.

In addition to advertising Ao Dai (Vietnamese traditional long dress), artists also presented the unique qualities of cultural and art renditions imbued with Vietnamese identities to millions of Chingay participants and spectators through graceful traditional dances.
