In his closing speech, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh highlighted the increasing importance of tourism to the cause of socio-economic development in many countries around the world.

Tourism, particularly spiritual tourism, contributes to boosting cultural exchanges and understanding between nations, as well as expanding opportunities for international co-operation and investment, he noted.

He stressed the regulatory role of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in instructing member countries to co-operate within specific projects and programmes, in order to promote the development of tourism, especially spiritual tourism, in a sustainable manner.

Thanking Vietnam for hosting the conference, Zoltan Somogyi, Executive Director for Member Relations and Services at the UNWTO, asserted that the successful organisation of the event affirmed the status of the Vietnamese tourism industry in the international community.

The event also offered a good opportunity for Vietnam to promote its culture and tourism potential, including that of Ninh Binh province, while demonstrating the prevalence of religious freedom in Vietnam, he said.

At the conference, delegates issued the ‘Ninh Binh Declaration’ on spiritual tourism for sustainable development.

The two-day event, held jointly by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ninh Binh People's Committee and the UNWTO, focused discussions on the meaning of spiritual tourism, cultural exchange and responsible tourism, spiritual tourism products and the sustainability of spiritual tourism sites.
