NDO – Vietnam’s no. 1 tennis player, Ly Hoang Nam, has made it through to the quarterfinals of the M15 Sham El Sheikh tournament in Egypt following his comeback against world no. 792 Federico Iannaccone in the round of 16 on February 27.

Nam made an unforced error at the end of the first set, allowing Iannaccone to take the lead with a 7-5 victory.

However, the Vietnamese player promptly redeemed himself by winning the second set 6-2 before demolishing the Italian opponent 6-0 in the decider to qualify for the last eight.

Next up for Nam is a quarterfinal clash against world no. 629 and sixth-seeded Daniele Capecchi (Italy).

Earlier, Nam surpassed world no. 392 and No. 2 seed Evgenii Tiurnev in the opening round via a walkover, as the Russian player decided to drop out halfway through the last set, at 2-6, 6-3, 3-1 in favour of the Vietnamese star.

Nam’s brilliant form in Egypt is expected to inspire the Vietnamese Davis Cup team to perform well in the upcoming 2020 Davis Cup World Group II Play-offs, where they will play guests to the Moroccan team on March 6-7, 2020.

The two teams will play a maximum of five matches on clay at the Royal Tennis Club de Marrakech in Marrakesh, Morocco, with the winning side qualifying for the 2020 Davis Cup World Group II and the losing side playing in Group III of the Asia/Oceania Zone.
