NDO – The 2020 AFC U23 Championship is taking place in Thailand from January 8 to 26, with Park Hang-seo’s Vietnamese side having been drawn against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPR Korea) in Group D.

The biennial tournament has brought together 16 teams, including Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, Jordan, Uzbekistan, the DPR Korea, the Republic of Korea, Japan, China, Australia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, and hosts Thailand.

Uzbekistan is currently the title holder following their 2-1 final victory against Vietnam U23s in Changzhou, China two years ago.

The 2020 AFC U23 Championship promises to be strongly competitive as it also acts as the AFC qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics men’s football event. Accordingly, the top three teams in Thailand will qualify for this year’s Summer Olympics in Japan as the AFC representatives.

With Japan having already qualified as the Olympic hosts, if they reach the semifinals of the continental championship, the other semifinalists are guaranteed qualification even before the phase commences.
