NDO – Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang blasted his second individual gold medal at the ongoing 30th SEA Games in the Philippines after finishing first in the men’s 1,500m freestyle final on the afternoon of December 5.

Hoang clocked the best time of 14:58.14, which was a new SEA Games record and over 17 seconds faster than the Indonesian runner-up, Aflah Prawira. Hoang’s teammate Nguyen Huu Kim Son grabbed a bronze in the same event with a time of 15:18.87.

Earlier on Wednesday, Hoang took gold and broke the SEA Games record in the men’s 400m freestyle event with a time of 3:49.08.

Tran Hung Nguyen won the second gold for Vietnamese swimming today as he emerged as the fastest in the men’s 200m individual medley with a time of 2:02.56.

Fencer Nguyen Tien Nhat claimed the men’s individual epee crown after beating Malaysia’s Koh I Jie 15-5 in the final. This is Vietnam’s second fencing gold thus far in this year’s SEA Games, following the men’s sabre triumph by Vu Thanh An.

Top swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien did not live up to expectations as she only settled for a silver in the women’s 50m backstroke with a time of 29.64 seconds, 0.24 seconds slower than the gold medalist Elena Pedersen (Singapore).

Vietnam won one more silver thanks to Nguyen Tan Cong (judo, men’s -73kg), and two bronzes medals in petanque and judo.

As of 6.30pm today, the Vietnamese sports delegation continued to stand second in the medal table with 31 golds, 32 behind the Philippines and four ahead of third-placed Indonesia.
