NDO – Vietnam’s top tennis star Ly Hoang Nam claimed the title championship at the VTF Masters 500-3 – Lach Tray Cup 2019 after beating Trinh Linh Giang 6-1, 6-3 in the men’s singles final match on September 15.

The week-long tournament officially wrapped up in the northern port city of Hai Phong on Sunday, witnessing Hoang Nam and his teammate at Hai Dang club, Linh Giang, vie for the men’s singles title.

However, the clash between two top Vietnamese players was not much of a surprise as Nam soon proved his class over his 1997-born teammate. In the first set, Nam played stably, along with extremely strong defences that made Linh Giang unable to score. Nam easily won two breaks to go straight to a 6-1 victory.

In set 2, Giang played with great determination. After being led 0-2, Giang had two chances to level the gap when breaking his opponent's two serve games. However, Nam continued to play well to maintain his advantage to end the set at 6-3.

Beating Giang in two straight sets, Nam won the title for the first time as a player of Hai Dang club and also the first time under the national championship system held by the Vietnam Tennis Federation (VTF) in 2019.

In the women’s side, Phan Thi Thanh Binh (Da Nang) encountered Dao Minh Trang (Hung Thinh - Ho Chi Minh City) for the women’s singles title on Sunday. Underdog Minh Trang unexpectedly won the first set at 6-3, forcing impatient Thanh Binh to make mistakes in the second set before accepting defeat at 6-1. Winning 2-0, Trang brought the third championship title to Hung Thinh - Ho Chi Minh City team.

A day earlier, Trang and her teammate Tran Thuy Thanh Truc also won the women's doubles championship, while duo Pham Minh Tuan/Le Quoc Khanh of Hung Thinh - Ho Chi Minh City also excelled in defeating the first seed pair Ly Hoang Nam/Trinh Linh Giang of Hai Dang club to win the men's doubles title.

Lach Tray Cup 2019 is the 3rd tournament in the system of VTF Masters 500 in 2019. The event brought together 68 strong players from 12 clubs nationwide, competing in men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles and women's doubles for a total purse of VND500 million.

The national-level tournament, hosted by the VTF and Lach Tray tennis club in Hai Phong for the first time, also aimed to select outstanding players for the national team to prepare for the upcoming 30th Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines later this year.
