Juventus snare De Ligt from Ajax for EUR75 million

Juventus announced the signing of Dutch teenager Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax Amsterdam on Thursday, having secured one of the most sought-after young players in world soccer for EUR75 million (US$84.25 million).

The 19-year-old Netherlands international, who captained his former club in their thrilling run to the Champions League semi-finals last season, has signed a five-year deal with the Serie A champions.

* Ryan Fox equalled the record for the lowest back nine at a British Open when he stormed home in 29 strokes at Royal Portrush on Thursday. The world number 107 was three over par after 11 holes and there were few signs of the fireworks that were to come. But the Kiwi cranked his game into another gear and rattled home with six birdies in the final seven holes, capping off his heroics by banging in a 10-footer at the last. Fox signed for a three-under 68.

* Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit will continue to host the Australian Grand Prix until at least the end of 2025, Formula One said on Thursday. It said a two-year contract extension with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation was signed in London.

* Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Ahmad Ahmad fired his deputy Amaju Pinnick, the president of the Nigerian Football Federation, on Thursday. Ahmad appointed Constant Omari of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Pinnick's place as first vice president.

* England right back Kieran Trippier said the lure of working with Diego Simeone, who he described as one of the top coaches around, convinced him to switch from Tottenham Hotspur to Atletico Madrid. Trippier was unveiled as an Atletico player on Thursday, a day after completing a transfer reported to be worth 20 million pounds, while Spain defender Mario Hermoso was also presented after sealing a move from Espanyol for 25 million euros.

* Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has been fined £75,000 (US$93,690) and banned for six weeks, four of which are suspended, for breaching betting regulations, the Football Association said on Thursday. The FA said the 29-year-old had been charged with 11 alleged breaches of its betting rules, nine of which were dismissed by an independent regulatory commission.

* Sports streaming service DAZN said on Thursday its subscribers would be able to receive Eurosport in Germany and three other European countries after a deal with the channel's owner Discovery. Under the agreement, live and on-demand content from Eurosport 1 HD and Eurosport 2 HD will be available to DAZN subscribers in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Spain from Aug. 1.

* Slovakia's reigning champions Slovan Bratislava were left stunned after being relegated in a penalty shootout by FK Sutjeska on Wednesday. The small but feisty football club from Montenegro achieved a surprising 1-1 draw in Bratislava and repeated the same result on home turf in the second leg of UEFA Champions League First Qualifying Round.

* Israeli soccer club Hapoel Be'er Sheva entered the second qualifying round of the Europa League after beating Albania's KF Laci 1-0 on Thursday evening, a week after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Albania. Beer Sheva will face Kazakh team FC Kairat Almaty on July 25 in Israel and a week later in Kazakhstan.

* Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi said Thursday that his team is preparing in the best conditions for the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal, stressing his men "are playing this match just to win." The final will be held at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday between Algeria and Senegal, with the presence of FIFA's chief Gianni Infantino.

* Iran international winger Milad Mohammadi has joined Belgian top-flight soccer club KAA Gent, the Tehran Times reported on Thursday. The 25-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Belgian team, joining as a free agent from Russian outfit Akhmat Grozny.

* Spanish top flight football clubs from the Basque region have reached an agreement enabling fans to watch their Basque derby games at affordable prices. Osasuna's return to La Liga after winning promotion from the second division at the end of last season means that there will be 25 Basque derby games in the Spanish top flight in 2019-20.
