NDO – Vietnam’s swimming star Nguyen Thi Anh Vien will vie for top glory in three disciplines at the 18th FINA World Championships 2019, to take place in Gwangju, Republic of Korea, from July 12 to 28.

Anh Vien is one of the seven Vietnamese competitors in the tournament. The 1996-born swimmer has just returned home from a long training camp in the United States, and is set to leave for the RoK in the next five days.

Vien is known as the most prolific swimmer in Vietnam. She collected 19 gold, seven silver and two bronze medals, and broke 11 records at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. In addition, Vien pocketed two Asian Games bronzes, alongside one silver and two bronzes at the FINA World Cup.

According to Tran Duc Phan, Deputy Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, Anh Vien remains the pillar of Vietnam’s swimming team at the SEA Games arena. She has been assigned the target of taking home eight gold medals at the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines later this year.

The 18th FINA World Championships in Gwangju is considered a good warm-up for Vien. At the 2017 tournament, she registered to participate in three events: 400m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley, but then only competed in the two medley categories, clocking respective times of 2:13.36 and 4:40.39.

The 2019 competition will bring together more than 2,620 athletes from 194 countries and territories around the world, offering 76 sets of medals for the swimming, finswimming, water polo and artistic swimming events.
