Costa banned for eight games for insulting referee

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has been handed an eight-match La Liga ban by the Spanish Football Federation’s Competition Committee for abusing the referee after he was shown the red card during last Sunday’s 2-0 defeat by Barcelona.

* Chilean Christian Garin saved five match points to upset second seed Jeremy Chardy of France 3-6 7-6(4) 7-6(7) and advance to the quarter-finals of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston on Wednesday.

* The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) has postponed this weekend's second division fixtures following warnings from UEFA regarding suspected match-fixing. The CFA board of directors will meet next Tuesday to examine rule changes to stamp out any perceived corruption, including a points deduction, relegation or removal of a team found to be guilty of match-fixing.

* The world athletics governing body (IAAF) has closed an ethics investigation into its president Sebastian Coe after finding there was no basis on which “any disciplinary case could be established” that he had “intentionally misled” a British Parliamentary Committee in 2015.

The legends were shortly followed by American Andrew Landry hitting the first competitive drive from the field of 87 in the year's first major championship under the towering Georgia pines.

* UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Ajax Amsterdam and Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday after crowd trouble during their Champions League quarter-final matches this week.

* Germany's Maximilian Schachmann consolidated his overall lead in the Tour of the Basque Country on Thursday (Apr 11) by claiming his third stage victory in four days.

* Monaco midfielder Cesc Fabregas said on Wednesday his main aim is to take the Ligue 1 club club back to the Champions League, a trophy he is yet to win in his illustrious career.
