NDO/VNA – The Vietnam Tennis Open Da Nang City 2019 closed in the central city on January 12 after seven days of competition, with the trophies in the singles and doubles going to Spain’s Marcel Granollers and duo Cheng-Peng Hsieh and Christopher Rungkat.

In the singles’ final match, Marcel Granollers, who is at the 96th place of the Association of Tennis Professional (ATP)’s rankings, easily defeated Italy’s Matteo Viola, the 292nd place, 2-0 to secure cash worth US$7,200 and 80 points in the ATP rankings.

Meanwhile, the final match between duo Cheng-Peng Hsieh (Taiwan) and Christopher Rungkat (Indonesia) and duo Leander Paes (India) and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela (Mexico) was considered one of the fiercest matches of the tourney when it entered a super tie-break.

After winning the first set with a result of 6-3, Cheng-Peng Hsieh and Christopher Rungkat were defeated 2-6 in the second set, before winning 11-9 in the super tie-break set. They pocketed US$3,100 and 80 points in the ATP rankings each.

Vietnamese No. 1 player Ly Hoang Nam and Trinh Linh Giang competed in the men’s singles, while Nam and his teammate Le Quoc Khanh, and Giang and Vietnamese American Daniel Nguyen played in the doubles. However, they were defeated by their strong rivals.

It is the first time Da Nang city has hosted a professional tennis tournament in the ATP system.

The tournament, drawing the participation of 48 Vietnamese and foreign players, offers total cash prizes of US$55,000 and 80 points in the ATP rankings each for winners of single and double titles.
