NDO - The 2-1 win over the Philippines at Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium on December 6 meant the Vietnam national squad advanced to the final of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 with an impressive unbeaten run. But looking back to the last loss by the squad, maybe the figure that followed would surprise many.

* Vietnam secure ticket to AFF Cup finals

* Park Hang-seo thanks players for a great match

* International media impressed with Vietnam’s AFF Cup final berth

According to FOX Sports Asia, the aforementioned impressive victory has helped the Vietnam national squad remain unbeaten in 14 matches in all competitions. Surprisingly, coach Park Hang-seo’s side currently holds the longest active unbeaten streak in world football, only one game behind equalling the run by World Champions France.

Before Vietnam, the longest unbeaten streak in world football belonged to the reigning World Cup champions. Didier Deschamps's side went 15 matches unbeaten, but the impressive run came to a stop after Les Bleus lost to the Netherlands 2-0 in the penultimate round of League A, in the UEFA Nations League in mid-November.

Thus, only Vietnam are maintaining a long unbeaten streak. Their last defeat came more than two years ago. At that time, the "Golden Dragons" lost 2-1 to Indonesia in the first semi-final first leg at the AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 on December 3. But since then, the Vietnamese team has not faced defeat.

They now sit on seven draws and seven victories as they head into the final against Malaysia. If they successfully navigate Malaysia in the final over two legs, Park's players will probably surpass the French record.

And if they continue to remain unbeaten in the two friendly games against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on December 25 and the Philippines on December 31, the "Golden Stars" will close the 2018 with success, along with a two-year unbeaten streak.
