American rival Paul Oosterbaan is currently ranked 816 in the world, with a physical advantage (over 2 m height) and a strong serve. However, Nam, with his experience playing in international tournaments, calmly deployed his play from the end of the field, playing well in defence and earned two breaks in the first set, before quickly ending the set with a 6-1 victory.

In set 2, the high outdoor temperatures affected the concentration of both players and mistakes appeared more often. Nam continued to dominate his opponent as he broke Oosterbaan’s two serves in two games. Finally, after more than an hour of playing, the Tay Ninh native beat Oosterbaan 2-0 (6-1 6-4) to advance to the round of the top four.

Hoang Nam (far left) and Quoc Khanh beat the Swedish duo 2-0 to book a berth at the semi-finals of the men’s double event at the 2018 Vietnam F4 Futures tournament.

In the men's doubles quarterfinals later, Nam played alongside his senior peer Le Quoc Khanh against Swedish duo Frost Linus and Christian. The first set started in favour of the home duo as Hoang Nam - Quoc Khanh won the break and led 4-1. However, the two Nordic players returned to strong form and levelled the score that forced the set to enter a tie-break. Nam and Khanh then won 7-1 to take a 1-0 lead after set 1.

Set 2 took place with a similar scenario. After nine games, the score was 5-4 and the Vietnamese pair won the decisive game again, thus ending the set 6-4 and also wrapping up the match with a final score of 2-0.

Nam will play both the semi-finals of men’s singles and doubles events at the Vietnam F4 Futures. In the men's singles, the 21-year-old will face Filip Bergevi (Sweden), while in the men's doubles semi-final match, Hoang Nam - Quoc Khanh will encounter Billy Harris (UK) - Goran Markovic (Serbia).
