Egypt coach ready to unleash Salah on Russia

Egypt coach Hector Cuper is ready to gamble on Mohamed Salah and is hoping the striker comes through a final fitness test on the eve of the country's World Cup match against hosts Russia. Salah spent last season scything through some of the best defences in Europe, scoring 44 goals in all competitions for Liverpool in the most prolific campaign of his career.

* French Antoine Griezmann has signed a contract extension at Atletico Madrid until 2023, days after rejecting a move to Barcelona. Griezmann scored 29 goals and added 15 assists in 49 apperances in all competitions last season, helping Atletico Madrid win the Europa League.

* Russia on Monday (June 18) charged two drunk England fans with minor offences over their unruly behaviour on a train to the city of Volgograd where their national team are to play Tunisia. One fan was taken to hospital after cutting himself on a carriage door, while another who tried to leave the train was detained and charged with disobeying a policeman's orders.

* Serbia's Aleksandar Kolarov had a good day in Samara: he scored a magnificent World Cup goal and was presented with a Lada car by the governor. The Roma defender struck a thunderous second-half free-kick that clinched Serbia a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica on Sunday (June 17).

* The Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have agreed to hold a joint basketball match in Pyongyang and to form some combined teams at August's Asian Games in Indonesia, the two countries announced on Monday (June 18), after a day of negotiations at their shared border.

* French Open runner-up Dominic Thiem began his grasscourt season with a convincing 7-6(5) 6-2 victory over Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the opening round of the Halle Open on Monday. Thiem will next face Japan's Yuichi Sugita, who beat German wildcard Maximilian Marterer 6-4 5-7 6-3.

* World number seven Karolina Pliskova's Wimbledon preparations suffered a setback in a 6-2 6-3 defeat by Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia in the opening round of the Nature Valley Classic in Birmingham on Monday. Rybarikova will face Kristina Mladenovic for a place in the quarter-finals after the Frenchwoman edged past Czech Katerina Siniakova 1-6 6-2 6-4.

* Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka made light work of Britain's Cameron Norrie in the opening round of the Queen's Club grasscourt tournament on Monday, winning 6-2 6-3. Next up for him will be a second-round clash against American fifth seed Sam Querrey who beat British wildcard Jay Clarke 6-3 6-3.

* AS Roma have rewarded coach Eusebio Di Francesco with a new two-year contract after a successful first season at the Stadio Olimpico, the Italian Serie A club said on Monday. The 48-year-old guided Roma to a third-place finish in the league and the Champions League semi-finals.
