NDO – The first two matches of Group F concluded early on June 14, seeing Hungary defeat favourites Austria 2-0 and Portugal fail to bag the full three points against underdogs Iceland following a 1-1 draw.

Austria had been unbeatable in the Euro 2016 qualification topping Group G with nine wins and one draw, while Hungary won play-off matches to qualify for the first major international tournament since the 1986 World Cup.

Considered as being on the upper hand, Austria promptly took control in the opening period, but tough resistance from Hungary forced the first half to go by without any goals.

Two minutes after the hour mark, Hungary surprised supporters at Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux as Adam Szalai beat goalkeeper Almer in a face-off to put Hungary ahead.

Throughout the remainder of the match, Austria were determined for an equalizer but also revealed a lot of gaps in their defensive line, which made them pay with Zoltan Stieber doubling the advantage for Hungary on the 87th minute mark.

The unexpected loss puts Austria in extreme difficulty as they will meet Portugal, captained by Cristiano Ronaldo, in the next group matchup. Meanwhile, Hungary’s performance over powerhouses Austria has enabled them to look for positive results in their second Euro match with Iceland on June 18.

In another match the same day, Portugal missed out on a perfect start to their Euro campaign as Nani opened the scoring for the Portuguese on 31 minutes, only for Bjarnason to level the game for Iceland 20 minutes later.
