NDO – A solitary goal by defender Fabian Schaer helped Switzerland emerge as 1-0 victors against Albania in the Euro 2016 Group A match on June 11.

The Swiss cruised ahead after just five minutes as Albanian goalkeeper Etrit Berisha rushed out to clear a corner, enabling Schaer to comfortably head in.

Albania’s efforts to level then were dealt a blow after their captain Lorik Cana was sent off for a second yellow card as a result of his handball in the 36th minute.

Blerim Dzemaili failed to double Switzerland’s advantage with a free-kick hitting the right-hand post afterwards.

Albania pressed for an equaliser despite being a man light, while goalie Berisha tried to make amends for his costly error by brilliantly blocking Haris Seferovic’s powerful strike in the 66th minute.

Albania’s golden chance to level the game came three minutes from time when substitute Shkelzen Gashi chipped a delightful pass through the Swiss defence, only for Sommer to strike over the bar.

With the narrow victory, the Swiss joined hosts France at the top of Group A with three points each.

Next up for Albania will be a group match with France on June 16, while Romania face Switzerland the same day.
