NDO – The 10th International Conference on Asian and Pacific Coasts (APAC 2019) opened at the Thuyloi University (TLU) in Hanoi on September 26 with the participation of more than 300 delegates from 18 countries and territories.

The event, held biennially by APAC member countries, aims to promote academic and technical exchange on coastal related studies that include coastal engineering and coastal environmental problems, among the Asian and Pacific countries/regions.

With the theme “Living with nature, coping with coastal changes”, APAC 2019 consists of nine major professional groups concerning the topics: “Ocean waves, tides, storm surges and tsunamis”, “Beach erosion and coastal sediment transport”, “Coastal and estuarine hydrodynamics”, “Lowland development and reclamation”, “Beach development and coastal protection”, “Marine ecology and coastal environments”, “Marine and offshore renewable energy”, “Climate change and coastal adaptation” and “Coastal hazards and risk assessment”.

The seminar also features one sub-committee on Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region with the topic “Mekong Delta, beach erosion and saltwater intrusion”.

In his address, Trinh Minh Thu, Rector of TLU, said he hoped that through APAC 2019, scientists will share domestic experience as well as experience and technologies from the advanced countries in the region, in order to work out the most effective measures to ensure immediate and long-term sustainability for the Mekong Delta.

The conference is scheduled to take place in three days with six major lectures and 199 presentations delivered in 10 parallel sessions.
