NDO - Traffic in Hanoi was brought into a standstill on the afternoon of July 15 as heavy rainfall during the afternoon rush hour submerged many of the capital city’s streets.

Motorbikes and cars were crammed into crowded streets where the flow of traffic inched slowly amid rain and floodwater.

According to weather reports, downpours were recorded in the central districts of Hoang Mai, Dong Da, Tay Ho, Ba Dinh and Hoan Kiem, causing temporary flooding of many streets.

At 5pm, the average water level in Dong Da and Tay Ho was 48 centimetres while the water level was also high at 35-40 centimetres in Nam Tu Liem, Ba Dinh and Hoan Kiem districts.

In most streets, the water receded after the rain stopped but several locations remained submerged afterwards, such as Hoa Bang, Tran Binh and Minh Khai.

* In the northern province of Cao Bang, one person was killed and another is missing due to heavy rains from July 13-15, which also flooded and damaged 103 homes and more than 1,000 hectares of crop.

Several roads were also flooded and eroded, causing traffic disruption.

Damage to roads, crops and houses as a result of torrential rains were also reported in the northern mountainous provinces of Bac Kan and Lai Chau.
