NDO – The Belgian-funded project on the extension and reinforcement of Cau Ngoi channel in Thanh Hai commune, Phan Rang - Thap Cham city was completed,as announced by the People’s Committee of Ninh Thuan province on June 24.

The project has a total investment of VND180 billion (US$7.74 million) including VND145 billion (US$6.23 million) funded by the Kingdom of Belgium with the remaining amount being funded by the Vietnamese Government.

The extension of Cau Ngoi channel is a pilot model to respond to climate change under the “Water resource management and urban development in relation to climate change in Ninh Thuan province" project funded by the Belgian and Vietnamese Governments.

The implementation of the project is expected to ensureflood drainage for the 2.682ha basin in the localities of Thanh Hai commune in Van Hai ward, Phan Rang - Thap Cham city and Khanh Hai town in Ninh Hai district.

The project will also create favourable conditions for nearly 50,000 local people to improve agricultural production without dependence on natural water resources.

The extension of the channel was commenced in July 2018 which has a total length of 7.2km.

The inauguration ceremony of the project saw the presence of Belgian Ambassador to Vietnam Paul Jansen and chief representative of Belgian Development Agency in Vietnam Krista Verstraelen.

The Belgian Government has provided non-refundable aid worth approximately EUR32 million for Ninh Thuan to carry out five projects related to climate change response during the past 10 years.
