Farmers start cultivation, fishermen earn good catch at the beginning of Lunar New Year

NDO – Production activities have started across the nation right at the beginning of the Lunar New Year 2019.

On the afternoon of February 9 (the fifth day of the first lunar month this year), thousands of Lang Son people and tourists flocked to the "Long Tong" (going to the field) festival in Pac Moong, Quang Trung I village, Mai Pha commune, Lang Son city, signaling the start of the cultivation season of the new year. Attendees enjoyed typical Lang Son cuisine, cherry and plum blossoms and folk games at the festival.

In Dong Trieu town (Quang Ninh province), along with activities during the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival, local people are ready to harvest Atlantic potatoes during the 10 days after Tet. Dong Trieu cultivated on 218 ha of potatoes in this year’s crop, an increase of 48 ha compared to the previous year.

After the Tet holiday, local farmers in Thua Thien - Hue province went to the fields to start their new year production.

On the morning of February 9, fishing boats in Quynh Phuong ward, Hoang Mai town, Nghe An province, earned good catch after their first fishing trips at the beginning of the new year, collecting fish worth hundreds of million VND per ship. According to the Quynh Phuong ward authorities, the whole locale has more than 600 fishing vessels and the total catch in 2019 is expected to reach 20,000 tonnes.

Positive fishing results have also been recorded in Ly Son Island in Quang Ngai province and in Phuoc Hai town, Dat Do district of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province.

On February 9, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) said that the group and its member units have arranged for over 15,000 officials and employees to work through the Tet holidays at offshore rigs and other key oil and gas projects nationwide. The PVN leaders have also regularly visited and inspected oil and gas exploitation activities while conveying their Tet wishes to those working on offshore platforms without a Tet holiday. In 2019, PVN is striving for total revenue of VND612.2 trillion, contributing VND87.5 trillion to the State budget.

Vicem Song Thao Cement Company officially began exporting its first order for customers in the new year on Saturday morning. The unit arranged three-shift production continuously during the Tet holiday. In 2018, Vicem Song Thao completed the planned targets, in which the total consumption reached nearly 1.2 million tonnes, up 14% over the same period, and pre-tax profit reached over VND20 billion, up VND19, 77 billion compared to 2017.

Dung Quat oil refinery has ensured continuous and stable operation during Tet, reaching 108% of its design capacity, equivalent to 1,100 m3 per hour. During the three official days of Tet holiday, Dung Quat processed about 65,340 tonnes of crude oil to generate 64,833 tonnes of various products.

The Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) has said the group and its member units will return to work on February 11. In 2018, Vinatex's export turnover reached more than US$3 billion, up 10.9% and total revenue reached over VND48.6 trillion, up 6.6%. In 2019, the group is striving to increase its export turnover by about 6-8%, total revenue up by 5-7% and profit by 12% compared to 2018.
