NDO - Deputy Prime Minister led a Government delegation on March 14 to pay his last respects to the Most Venerable Thich Thanh Sam, the deputy patriarch of Vietnamese Buddhism, who passed away two days ago.

The 90-year-old Buddhist monk was ordained at the age 13 and made significant contributions to both the Buddhist cause and the Vietnamese revolution.

During the war against the French, the senior monk helped to protect undercover revolutionaries and mobilised local residents to contribute their manpower and belongings to the resistance efforts.

After peace was restored in 1954, the Most Venerable Thich Thanh Sam took part in the movement to eradicate illiteracy.

He was awarded with many Party and State honours for his excellent service.

Expressing his condolences, Deputy PM Binh extolled the virtues of the Most Venerable Thich Thanh Sam, considering him as a fine example of the combination between Buddhism and worldly affairs.

Earlier on March 13, Truong Thi Mai, head of the Central Commission for Mass Mobilisation, also paid her last respects to the revered Buddhist monk.
