NDO – The first Vietnam-Laos border friendship exchange kicked off in the mountainous northern province of Son La on July 22.

The event was organised as part of the activities to celebrate the 40th anniversary since the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Treaty of Amity and Co-operation (July 18) and the 55th anniversary since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties (September 5).

The event will involve the Border Guard High Command of Vietnam, the Lao Border Guard Department under the Lao General Staff of People’s Army, and the General Department of Police under the Lao Ministry of Public Security.

The programme aims to foster the solidarity and traditional friendship between Vietnamese and Lao border guards and to increase their collaboration for the sake of constructing a borderline of peace, friendship, co-operation and development.

The exchange will feature a joint patrol from Marker 256 to Marker 266, near the Long Sap border gate, a martial arts demonstration, the inauguration of a new military medical station, free health check-ups for local residents, the granting of scholarships to 10 poor students and the presentation of breeding cows to 100 poor households from the two countries, as well as a seminar on border defence, anti-crime and socio-economic development in border areas.
