NDO - Vietnam has adequate capacity to test for the new coronavirus that causes the Covid-19 disease, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long has confirmed.

He added that the testing accuracy of a technique known as real-time PCR conducted by Vietnam is similar to other countries.

Speaking at a meeting on February 24, Long stated that the Ministry of Health has carried out various measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and ensure safety for the public.

In Vietnam there are three WHO-certified testing facilities, namely the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City, the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in Hanoi.

These three institutes have transferred technology and provided training to 22 laboratories equipped with the necessary devices and staff, which also produce reliable results, said Long.

The health official added that for all cases suspected of contracting the disease, their specimens will be tested at two facilities to compare and ensure accuracy.

Concerning the recent death of a high-school student in Hue, who showed symptoms of a cough, fever and difficulty breathing for about a week, her specimen was tested using real-time PCR at the Hue Central Hospital and the result was negative.

The result was then corroborated by another test carried out by the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang.
