NDO – Information management has become an urgent and long-term mission in order to create a healthy, positive information environment, thus contributing to the stable and sustainable development of society, heard a Hanoi workshop on November 4.

The international scientific conference “Managing Information on Social Media in the Context of the Information Explosion” took place at the Academy of Journalism and Communication (AJC), co-organised by the academy, the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information (under the Ministry of Information and Communications), and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

The conference acted as a forum for Vietnamese and Korean experts to exchange experiences, methods and solutions for information management in order to promote the positives while limiting the negative aspects of social media.

It is part of a series of international symposiums held by the AJC in cooperation with the KOICA since 2016, aimed at enriching the theoretical base of policy communication as well as exchanging experiences between Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in terms of communication policy.

At the thematic sessions during the event, Vietnamese and Korean scholars focused on views on and approaches to information management, as well as looking into initiatives and solutions for managing information on social media platforms.

With the rapid development of digital technology, social media has become a popular platform for information exchange but it can also be an environment rife with misinformation and disinformation. Therefore, information management has to be associated with the prompt detection, handling and prevention of misinformation on social media.

Participants at the workshop make donations to support local people in the central region affected by natural disasters and floods.

Assoc. Prof, Dr. Luu Van An, Acting Rector of the AJC, stated that managing information on social media has become an urgent and long-term mission towards creating a healthy, positive information environment, thus contributing to the stable and sustainable development of society.

KOICA Vietnam Country Director, Cho Han Deog, said that with the rapid development of digital technology, social media has become a popular platform for exchanging information, but it is also causing negative consequences in terms of false information. Through the AJC, Vietnam's top media training institute, KOICA will help the two countries create a sound media environment surrounding various social phenomena, he added.

At the conference, Korean experts exchanged the ROK’s experience in policy communication and information management on social media amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants agreed that the new media environment has brought about “unconventional” challenges in terms of managing information, requiring innovation in thinking and management models. They stressed the need for managers to enhance their capacity of making policies, designing regulations and predicting trends, while audiences also need to enhance their capacity with regard to accessing and evaluating information, as well as improving their sense of responsibility in using social media for the purposes of personal and social development.
