NDO – The People’s Committee of Con Dao island district in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province has coordinated with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Vietnam to work on a project to reduce the use of plastic bags and single-use plastic products.

Entitled ‘Con Dao says no to plastic bags with the goal of zero plastic waste’, the project will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year with a range of activities including the installation of a signing board at Con Dao market to encourage people to reduce their use of plastic bags.

In addition, residents and tourists at the market can register to use reusable shopping bags in environmentally-friendly materials, returning the bags after their shopping journeys.

According to Pham Bao An, head of the district’s Natural Resources and Environment Office, there is a large amount of untreated waste in Con Dao, which has had a negative impact on the local environment.

Therefore, the project has been launched to raise public awareness of reducing and controlling plastic waste, and changing behaviour for the environmental benefit.

Nguyen My Quynh, a representative from WWF-Vietnam, expressed her belief that thanks to the positive support and participation of Con Dao islanders as well as the strong determination of local authorities, the project will succeed in turning Con Dao into an island with zero plastic waste.
