Nhan Dan Online – Movitel, a joint venture between Vietnam’s telecom firm Viettel and Mozambique’s SPI, has won the Judges Awards category of the Mobile Innovations Awards for companies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The award was presented to Movitel after the company overcame many major e-commerce and telecom companies in the world with its convincing and unique solution based on the principle that telecom services were a basic human need.

Last year, Movitel won the Competitive Strategy Leadership Award presented by US consulting firm Frost & Sullivan for doubling its network coverage in Mozambique’s rural areas in just over a year, generating over 20,000 jobs for local people.

So far Movitel has installed 2,800 base transceiver stations (BTS), making up half of all BTS stations throughout Mozambique.

It has also built an extensive network of 25,000 kilometres of optical cables and 12,600 outlets, to provide services to 80% of Mozambique’s population.

Since its debut in May 2012, Movitel has signed 5 million subscribers, or 32% of Mozambique’s market share, and is on track to become the largest mobile network operator in the African country.
In 2013, Movitel posted revenue of US$154.5 million with profits estimated at US$8.8 million.
