Nhan Dan Online – Hanoi is planning to build a new dumping ground in the west of the city using the semi-aerobic landfill technology, commonly known as the Fukuoka method, from Japan.

The VND49 billion (US$2.3 million) project aims to treat waste produced by residents in areas along the Thang Long Avenue and collected at the Xuan Son Waste Treatment Plant in Son Tay town.

The Fukuoka method, which uses pipes to bring outside air into the middle of a landfill, thereby encouraging decomposition by microbes, has been widely adopted in Japan since the late 1970s.

According to the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment, this technology would help improve the environment in Xuan Son commune, where the plant is located, and nearby areas.

The Hanoi People’s Committee said this model would be replicated throughout the city in the future if it proved to be more effective than existing methods.
