NDO - Vietnam’s newly-planted concentrated forest areas reached 106,300 hectares in the first half of this year, up 0.2% year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Of the total area, 278,976 hectares has received certificates of sustainable forest management.

A total of 109 forest fires occurred across the country during the same reviewed period, which damaged 269 hectares of forest.

At the same time, total revenue from environmental services fees totalled VND856 billion (US$36.94 million), fulfilling 30% of the yearly target.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has directed local authorities to increase forest coverage while tightening the management and protection of existing natural forests.

More drastic measures must also be taken to prevent deforestation and illegal wildlife hunting and trade, particularly in areas with abundant forest resources.
