NDO/VNA - Vietnam always values and supports South-South cooperation, affirmed Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son.

The diplomat made his statement at the plenary meeting of the second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation, which opened in Buenos Aires, Argentina on March 20. The central theme of the three-day discussion is how South-South cooperation, which refers to the technical cooperation among developing countries in the Global South, represents an opportunity to achieve the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Son said Vietnam has been engaged in collaborating with developing countries within the frameworks of bilateral ties, the Greater Mekong Subregion economic cooperation programme, the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN), and others in the region.

According to the deputy FM, the country has carried out over 10 triangular cooperation projects that sent over 300 experts to Africa for technology transfer and agricultural development support, contributing to poverty alleviation and food security in the region.

The deputy FM stressed that South-South cooperation needs to continue fostering developing nations’ solidarity, voices, and common interests regarding global issues, particularly in strengthening multilateralism and implementing the UN’s sustainable development goals.

Son suggested that the UN and other development organisations further assist the cooperation for world peace and prosperity.

Leading the Vietnamese delegation at the conference, the official also delivered a speech at the opening session of a dialogue with Asian countries and held sideline meetings with heads of delegations from Norway, Armenia, Ireland, the Maldives, and Ghana, among others.

At one of the sideline events, titled ‘Shaping the Future of Regional South-South Cooperation: Sharing ASEAN Experiences and Nurturing Synergies Across Regions’, the Vietnamese delegation gave a presentation on sci-tech and innovative contributions of the Asia-Pacific to South-South cooperation and triangular cooperation prospects.
