NDO/VNA – Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, lauded the UN Development Programme (UNDP)’s assistance for Vietnam over the past four decades, when he met with UNDP Administrator, Achim Steiner, in central Da Nang city on June 27.

Meeting on the side-lines of the 6th Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Assembly, they discussed the UN’s efforts to improve the transparency, representativeness and democracy of the UN organisations in order to better support countries in realising the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Vietnamese leader lauded the relations between the country and the UN over the past four decades. He stressed that Vietnam respects the UN’s central role, adding it will continue making contributions to all three pillars of the UN, which are peace and security, human rights and development.

For his part, Administrator Steiner said he was impressed with the achievements Vietnam has obtained after more than 30 years of reform, especially the success in socio-economic development and for fulfilling many of the MDGs ahead of schedule.

Meeting UNIDO Director Li Yong in the central city of Da Nang on June 27, the Government leader suggested that UNIDO assists Vietnam in improving its capacity in receiving and transferring technology, increasing power efficiency and developing human resources to serve production development.

The PM lauded the UNIDO leader’s participation in the GEF-6 as Vietnam and UNIDO are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their partnership.

For his part, Li Yong thanked Vietnam for supporting UNIDO’s activities over the years. Reviewing the cooperation outcomes between the two sides, including the project to develop an eco-industrial park and transfer technology in central Da Nang city, Li Yong pledged that UNIDO will continue coordinating with Vietnamese agencies in researching and applying new technology for sustainable development in Vietnam.
