Building a comprehensive and modern diplomacy

NDO – “Building a comprehensive and modern diplomacy; successfully implementing the 13rd National Party Congress's resolution " has been chosen as the theme of the emulation movement for the Foreign Ministry in 2021.

The emulation movement for the Foreign Ministry in 2021 was launched by Deputy Prime Minister cum Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh at a conference held in Hanoi on January 11 to review the work of the Foreign Ministry in 2020 and set out orientations for 2021.

Earlier, the conference assessed that the global and regional situations in 2020 saw many complicated and unprecedented developments, especially the Covid-19 pandemic which hasprofoundly impacted all aspects of international life and international relations. In that context, the foreign affairs of the Party and State have bravery and creativity to overcome challenges, create and take advantage of opportunities, deploy synchronously, comprehensively, dynamically adapt and achieve important results.

External affairs continue to be a bright spot in the overall achievements of the country, contributing to creating a favorable environment for national construction and defense, and enhancement of the country's position.

In 2020, Vietnam successfully assumed international roles, especially the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2020-2021, whilemaintaining and promoting relations with other countries by flexibly adjusting modes of external relations activities.

The work of international integration, with a focus on international economic integration, continues to make new breakthroughs with the ratification and signing of free trade agreements, thus creating an additional driving force for economic recovery.

External relations made an important contribution to the protection of the sovereignty of Vietnam and in accordance with international law. The protection of citizens and overseas Vietnamese has been implemented effectively.

Speaking at the conclusion of the conference, Deputy PM Pham Binh Minh suggested that the diplomatic sector in 2021 focus on effectively implementing the foreign policy of the 13rd Congress of the Party; continuing to bring relations between Vietnam with neighbouring countries, major countries, important partners and traditional friends, to a deeper and more sustainable level; raising the level of multilateral diplomacy and closely and effectively coordinating with the Party's foreign affairs channels, State diplomacy, people-to-people diplomacy,foreign defence and security; stepping up economic diplomacy, cultural diplomacy, and overseas Vietnamese work; and resolutely and persistently fighting to firmly protect Vietnam’s sea and islands sovereignty and legitimate interests in the East Sea.
