NDO – In the context of Vietnam’s extensive international integration, the foreign affairs should be more proactive and active in seeking and expanding markets, further mobilising resources from outside, and contributing to effectively implementing new-generation free trade agreements, including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh made the statement while chairing a conference held in Hanoi on January 21 to review the work of the Foreign Ministry in 2018 and set out orientations for 2019.

Politburo member Minh stated that, despite the complex and unpredictable developments of the global and regional situations in 2018, the foreign affairs of the Party and State were implemented in an effective manner with strategic visions and specific steps, contributing significantly to maintaining a peaceful and stable environment, attracting outside resources for national development, safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and improving the country’s position in the international arena.

He requested that the external relations in 2019 contribute more to effectively realising the tasks set by the National Assembly and the Government, with top priority given to extensively developing the existing relationships and strengthening the interwoven interests with key partners, especially neighbouring and regional countries, powers, and strategic and comprehensive partners.

In addition, external relations should also focus on effectively implementing multilateral diplomacy, especially in preparing for Vietnam’s 2020 ASEAN Chairmanship tenure and its bid to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2020-2021 term, the deputy PM said.

He asked for close coordination between foreign affairs and national defence and security, contributing to safeguarding national sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, especially the security and sovereignty of the sea and islands.

In order to fulfil the aforementioned tasks, Deputy PM Minh requested the acceleration of the building of the diplomatic sector, attaching great importance to training officials with a firm political stance, as well as further improving their expertise, profession and foreign language proficiency, towards building a gradually modern diplomacy.

He emphasised the need to enhance the coordination efficiency between the Foreign Ministry and other relevant ministries, departments, sectors and localities in foreign affairs activities and international integration, ensuring the overall efficiency in the spirit of taking national interests as the highest goal.

Concluding the conference, Deputy PM Minh launched the emulation movement for the Foreign Ministry in 2019, which is themed “Vietnamese diplomacy: proactive, creative, efficient, and effectively implementing the 12th National Party Congress’s Resolution”.
