NDO – The 5th Vietnam-International Silk and Brocade Festival opened in Hoi An ancient city, the central province of Quang Nam, on August 8, with many exchange activities and performances with a strong identity.

This year's festival attracts the participation of eight countries and dozens of silk and brocade villages of Vietnam such as Van Phuc, Nha Xa, Ma Chau, My Duc, Nam Cao, Tan Chau, Cham Ninh Thuan, along with the presence of nearly 80 artisans from Ha Giang, An Giang, Quang Nam and Da Nang.

This is the fifth time the festival has been held in Hoi An silk village. The event aims to honour the culture of traditional silk weaving as well a connect new international markets towards Vietnamese silk.

The highlight of the 5th Vietnam-International Silk and Brocade Festival is introducing and promoting investment projects on the cultural space "Quang Nam silk river" located on the axis connecting the two cultural heritages of Hoi An and My Son. The project also includes tourism investment activities that offer tourists a chance to visit the silk cultural space, bringing a new identity to Quang Nam's tourism economy.

According to Dang Vinh Tho, Chairman of Vietnam Silk Association, the demand for silk and silk products in the world is increasing along with the pace of socio-economic development. This is a very favourable condition, a basis for building the silk industry into an important economic sector of the country.

After the opening ceremony and the incense offering ceremony in Hoi An silk village, exchange programmes with artisans were held. The festival also hosts a display area for Vietnamese silk and brocade products, demonstrating the traditional process of silk weaving and brocade weaving of craft villages.

The festival runs until August 9.
