NDO – A festival featuring the traditional New Year celebration of the H’Mong ethnic group was held at the Hanoi University of Culture on January 13.

H’Mong people often celebrate their traditional New Year one month ahead of the lunar New Year festival when people finish harvesting their crops. Days before the festival, people prepare altars at their house and make new clothes to welcome the new spring.

‘Pao’ throwing is a popular community folk game of the H’Mong people. Participants are divided into male and female teams. The game is an opportunity for young men and women to meet each other and make friends.

A booth display indigenous dishes of the H’Mong people attracted many visitors.

The event, jointly held by the H’Mong people’s community, student’s association, and voluntary students’ club in Hanoi, aimed to promote their cultural identity and create a venue for young H’Mong people to practice their traditional culture.

Participants were invited to join various games, such as spinning top, stick pushing, and ‘yen’ playing (badminton).

Books and the traditional costumes of H’Mong ethic groups were also introduced to visitors.
