ASEAN officials discuss preparations for Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

NDO – Senior ASEAN officials gathered in Singapore on July 31 to discuss preparations for the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM-51) and related conferences, scheduled to take place in the country, from August 1 to 4.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) ASEAN Vietnam, led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the event.

At the meeting, the member countries reviewed and finalised the preparations for the AMM-51 and related meetings, including ASEAN Ministerial Meetings with 10 Dialogue Partners, the ASEAN + 3 Foreign Ministerial Meetings, the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the ASEAN Regional Forum.

The senior ASEAN officials agreed on the proposed agenda and the drafting of documents to report to the ministers for consideration or adoption, including the Draft Joint Communiqué of the AMM-51 and the ASEAN Declarations on Cooperation with partners in the fields of Information Security, Health, Environment, Counter Terrorism, Innovation and Nuclear Security.

They agreed that ASEAN should continue to promote the effective implementation of the ASEAN Community Building Master Plan, including measures to promote the implementation of the ASEAN Political-Security Community Blueprint 2025. They welcomed the positive results in the implementation of ASEAN priorities in 2018, including the initiatives of the Singaporean President for the ASEAN Smart Cities Network, ASEAN Law Institute, and a conference on terrorism in Southeast Asia.

Regarding ASEAN's external relations, they affirmed that ASEAN should continue to promote equality and mutual benefit between ASEAN and its partners on the basis of the agreed principles and modalities. The ASEAN countries agreed on the plan for the preparation of a ASEAN summit with its partners at the 33rd ASEAN Summit in November in Singapore.

The senior officials from ASEAN also spent considerable time exchanging views on building a common view of ASEAN on a number of emerging issues, including new proposals related to regional structures and developments in the East Sea issue.

The Vietnamese delegation at the event affirmed their willingness to work closely with the ASEAN member countries to contribute to the success of the AMM-51 and related conferences, while actively supporting the implementation of various initiatives under the theme of building a self-reliant and innovative ASEAN proposed by the President of Singapore, including the ASEAN Smart Cities Network.

As the coordinator of the ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations, Vietnam exchanged views with the ASEAN countries and agreed on the preparations for the forthcoming ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on August 3.

As planned, Vietnam will transfer its rotating role of coordinating the ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations to Thailand, while assuming the role of coordinating the ASEAN-Japan Dialogue Relations from August 2018.
