14th National Assembly completes Q&A session

The question and answer (Q&A) session of the 14th National Assembly (NA) took place from October 30 to November 1, with a focus on the outcomes of the implementation of the NA resolutions on specific supervision activities.

At the session, forty-six deputies raised 135 questions for the Deputy PMs, the Chief Judge of the Supreme People’s Court, the head of the Supreme People’s Procuracy, as well as 17 ministers and heads of sectors.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also appeared at the NA to clarify various issues regarding the Government’s responsibilities, and answered questions raised by deputies.

French PM Edouard Philippe pays official visit to Vietnam

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe paid an official visit to Vietnam from November 2 to 4 at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

During his stay in Vietnam, PM Edouard Philippe held talks with PM Phuc, paid a courtesy visit to General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President Nguyen Phu Trong, and met with Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.

The French leader visited the Presidential Palace relic site and attended a ceremony to inaugurate a new facility at France's International School Alexandre Yersin in Hanoi.

Moody's raises Vietnamese banks’ baseline credit assessments

Moody's Investors Service has upgraded the baseline credit assessments (BCAs) of 12 Vietnamese banks in its latest report, released on October 30, thanks to Vietnam’s strong economic growth and the banks’ progress in dealing with bad debt.

Moody’s has also taken other positive actions on its rated Vietnamese banks.

Accordingly, it has upgraded long-term local and foreign-currency issuer ratings and long-term local-currency deposit ratings of five banks. Meanwhile, two banks have earned higher ratings on long-term foreign-currency deposit. The remaining banks have their ratings unchanged.

Nguyen Phuong Khanh of Vietnam became the first Vietnamese to be crowned Miss Earth at the 2018 finale on November 3 in Manila, the Philippines.

Earlier in the competition, she won a gold medal for Asia & Oceania region in the national costume round and a silver medal in the swimsuit competition.

Born in 1994, the 1.71m tall beauty from Ben Tre province was the second runner-up at the Miss Sea Vietnam Global 2018 held in Phu Quoc, April this year.

Curtain comes down on fifth Hanoi International Film Festival

The fifth Hanoi International Film Festival (HANIFF) was held in Hanoi from October 27 to 31 under the theme “Cinema: Integration and Sustainable Development”.

This year’s festival featured 147 outstanding films from nearly 50 countries and territories, including more than 40 films from Vietnam. With 204 outdoor and indoor screenings, the festival offered a “cinema fest” to tens of thousands of audience members.

Other activities included a project market, a script-writing camp and an exhibition on filming locations in Vietnam.

Legendary golfer appointed ambassador for Vietnamese tourism

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has selected Australian professional golfer Greg Norman as the next ambassador for Vietnamese tourism for the 2018-2021 tenure.

Speaking at the ceremony held to present the appointment decision to Norman, in Hanoi on October 31, Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien said the selection has taken into account Norman’s contributions to Vietnam.

He stressed that Vietnam has favourable locations and resources to develop golf tourism and that the ambassador will help make the country a high-profile destination on the global golf map.

First Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia border friendship exchange held in Kon Tum

The Border Guard Command in collaboration with the Kon Tum provincial People's Committee organised the first Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia border friendship exchange programme 2018 in Kon Tum city, Kon Tum province, on November 2.

The exchange aims to enhance the solidarity and friendship among the three countries in general as well as between the authorities, people and border guard forces of Kon Tum and those of Rattnakiri province, Cambodia, and Attapeu and Sekong provinces, Laos, in particular.

The event features many activities, including a friendship seminar, a border marker salute and joint patrol, friendship tree planting at the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia border T-junction, as well as free check-ups and medicine supplies for people in border areas.

Chien sets new Vietnamese milestone in world billiards rankings

Vietnam’s No. 1 cueist, Tran Quyet Chien, set a new milestone for Vietnamese billiards, as he climbed one place to seventh in the latest world rankings announced by the Union Mondiale de Billiard (UMB) on October 29.

It is the highest world rating to be attained by a Vietnamese player in history.

Alongside Chien’s promotion, several other Vietnamese cueists also saw improvements in their UMB ratings, with Ngo Dinh Nai jumping up one notch to 17th position and Ma Minh Cam rising three places from 25th to 22nd.
