PM attends UN General Assembly’s 73rd session

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended the high-level general debate of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York City, the US, on September 27.

The Government leader engaged in an array of activities, including delivering a speech at the general debate of the UN General Assembly’s 73rd session and having meetings with the President of the UN General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and the leaders of five countries.

He also joined a discussion with major US businesses and met US friends of Vietnam, representatives of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the UN and the Vietnamese community in New York.

State funeral held for President Tran Dai Quang

The State funeral for Tran Dai Quang, Politburo member and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, was held on September 26 and 27.

Memorial services for the President were held in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and the President’s home province of Ninh Binh. Vietnamese embassies abroad also organised respect-paying ceremonies and opened condolence books for President Tran Dai Quang.

The burial service took place at 15:30 on September 27 at his home village in Quang Thien commune, Kim Son district, Ninh Binh province.

Some 1,500 domestic and international delegations with approximately 50,000 people had paid tribute to President Tran Dai Quang by 17:00 on September 26, according to the national funeral organising board.

Vietnam Trade Union convenes 12th congress in Hanoi

A total of 947 delegates representing more than 10.5 million trade union members nationwide gathered in Hanoi on September 24 – 26 for the 12th Congress of the Vietnam Trade Union.

During the three days of sitting, the participants also discussed and approved the Charter of the Vietnam Trade Union (revised).

The 12th-tenure Executive Committee of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) elected an Executive Board with 161 members and Bui Van Cuong was re-elected as the President of the 12th-tenure VGCL, with 100% of the votes.

ADB downgrades Vietnam’s outlook but says growth remains robust

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has revised down its GDP growth forecast for Vietnam in 2018 to 6.9% from a previous estimate of 7.1%, but noted that Vietnam’s economy continues to perform strongly despite domestic and external challenges.

In its latest report released on September 26, the ADB lowered Vietnam’s growth forecast, as exports, agriculture, construction and mining are expected to moderate in the second half of the year.

However, the ADB’s figure is still higher than the target of 6.7% aimed for by the Vietnamese government. The economy expanded by 7.08% in the first half of 2018 and the full-year target of 6.7% is highly likely to be met.

Vietnam licenses new 5-in-1 vaccine

An additional 5-in-1 combined vaccine has been licensed by the Ministry of Health (MoH) to be put into circulation in Vietnam in order to prevent the five diseases of diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B and Hib.

The vaccine, namely Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenza type b Conjugate Vaccine Adsorbed, is produced by the Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd and imported by the Company for Vaccine and Biological Production No.1 (Vabiotech).

In addition to the traditional five-in-1 vaccines being used in Vietnam, such as Pentaxim and ComBE Five, the new vaccine is expected to ensure an adequate supply of vaccines for children.

‘Co Ba Sai Gon’ to represent Vietnam at Oscars

Vietnamese movie Co Ba Sai Gon (The Tailor) has been selected to compete at the 2019 Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, for the Best Foreign Language Film award.

The film was selected through a secret ballot by a council headed by Trinh Thi Chi, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, on September 20.

Set in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) in the 1960s, ‘The Tailor’ is a romantic comedy featuring the culture and lifestyle of the Saigonese, as well as the history of Ao Dai (traditional Vietnamese long dress).

Juventus football academy makes debut in Vietnam

The Juventus Vietnam Football Academy officially made its debut on September 30 under the cooperation of the Binh Minh Sports Marketing Corporation (BMG) and Italy’s Serie A giant, Juventus.

The academy, stationed in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, is equipped with modern infrastructure, promising to offer learners training methods of European standards with the participation of professional trainers from the Turin-based football team.

The training is offered by both Juventus and talented Vietnamese trainers will help to result in a generation of qualified, professional and moral footballers who will be a source of players for domestic professional clubs, the national team and other FCs around the world.

Send-off held for Vietnamese athletes going to Asian Para Games

The Vietnam Paralympic Association (VPA) held a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on September 28 to send off the Vietnam disability sporting delegation to the third Asian Para Games in Indonesia (INAPG 2018).

The Vietnamese contingent, led by VPA Vice President and General Secretary, Vu The Phiet, is made up of 75 members, including 52 athletes and 11 trainers and medical workers.

The Vietnamese athletes will battle it out for medals in seven of the total 18 sports, namely swimming, track and field, powerlifting, chess, badminton, table tennis and judo.
