NDO – Nhan Dan Online reviews the notable events that have made the headlines over the past week.

1. Party chief successfully concludes France, Cuba visits

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation paid an official visit to France from March 25-27 and a State visit to Cuba from March 28-30.

During his stay in France, Party General Secretary Trong held talks with President Emmanuel Macron; met Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, President of the National Assembly Francois De Rugy; President of the Senate Gérard Larcher; laid wreaths at the statue of late President Ho Chi Minh to commemorate the national hero in Montreuil city and visited Choisy Le Roi City.

While in Cuba, Party General Secretary Trong held talks with First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) Central Committee and President of the Councils of State and Ministers of Cuba General Raul Castro Ruz. He had meetings with Second Secretary of the PCC Central Committee José Ramón Machado Ventura, Politburo member and President of the National Assembly Esteban Lazo Hernández, and Politburo member and First Vice President of the Cuban Council of State and the Council of Ministers Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermudez.

Over 40 documents, agreements and cooperative contracts were signed during his visit to France and Cuba, which will enable the relations between Vietnam and the two countries to develop in a stronger and more efficient manner in the future.

2. Sixth Greater Mekong Subregion Summit a success

The sixth Greater Mekong Sub-region Summit (GMS-6) and the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Summit (CLV-10) took place in Hanoi from March 29-31.

The GMS leaders adopted the Joint Statement of the sixth GMS Summit which affirms the GMS countries’ political commitments and determination to enhance the role of the mechanism.

The Hanoi Action Plan for 2018-2022 defines the major directions and cooperation measures for the future, while the Regional Investment Framework 2022 provides a list of more than 220 projects worth approximately US$66 billion.

3. NA Chairwoman pays official visit to Netherlands

Chairwoman of the Vietnamese National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan paid an official visit to the Netherlands from March 26-28, at the invitation of Speaker of the Dutch House of Representatives Khadija Arib.

As the first visit of a Vietnamese NA leader to the country, the trip aimed to consolidate the friendship and multi-faceted cooperation with the Netherlands, amid the celebration of the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations (April 9). It will mark a new milestone in the friendship and cooperation between the two Parliaments.

4. Vietnam economy grows 7.38% in first quarter, highest rate in ten years

Vietnam's economic growth is mainly driven by the manufacturing sector.

The Vietnamese economy expanded by 7.38% in the January-March period, its best first-quarter performance in a decade, driven by strong manufacturing growth, official data shows.

The General Statistics Office (GSO) stated on March 29 that the manufacturing sector grew by 13.56% during the period, the highest rate in the last seven years, thanks to the robust production of electronics, computers and steel.

Services were the largest contributor to GDP growth at 43.77%, while industry and agriculture contributed 35.26% and 10.34% respectively. The consumer price index rose by an average of 2.82% in the first three months of 2018, while credit growth was estimated at 2.23% as of March 20.

5. Grand ceremony marks Youth Union’s 87th anniversary

The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCMCYU) Central Committee held a ceremony to celebrate the union’s 87th anniversary in Hanoi on March 26.

Speaking at the grand ceremony, Politburo member Tran Quoc Vuong congratulated the achievements of the union over the past 87 years, affirming that Vietnamese youth are always an important volunteering force in making valuable contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.

On the occasion, 87 outstanding Youth Union officials and members who have made significant contributions to the youth movement nationwide were honoured with the Ly Tu Trong Award, a notable reward named after one of the young Vietnamese revolutionaries.

6. Ao dai festival attracts more than 100,000 visitors

Over 100,000 people responded to activities at the Ao dai festival, the fifth of its kind, which concluded in Ho Chi Minh City on March 26.

The organising board said the festival gathered 23 top designers and introduced more than 1,200 designs to the public. The festival featured 16 main activities, including an opening ceremony, which showcased 13 collections on the Nguyen Hue pedestrian street on March 3, and a mass performance of 3,000 people dressed in Ao dai on March 4.

7. Vietnam win International U-19 Football Tournament

Vietnam defended their title at the International U-19 Football Tournament, which ended on March 30 in the Central Highlands city of Pleiku.

During their last round match, the hosts beat Mito Holyhock 2-1, marking a successful tournament in which they won all four matches. Vietnam walked away with a prize of US$10,000. Their player, defensive midfielder Nguyen Hong, with his outstanding performance, received the MVP of the match award and was also voted best player of the tournament.

8. VITM Hanoi 2018 attracts 60,000 visitors

The sixth Vietnam International Travel Mart - VITM Hanoi 2018 drew about 60,000 visitors.

The sixth Vietnam International Travel Mart - VITM Hanoi 2018, which took place from March 29 to April 1 at the Hanoi Friendship Cultural Palace on 91 Tran Hung Dao Street, attracted roughly 60,000 visitors.

The event featured over 500 pavilions of 675 firms, including 112 by trade promotion agencies of 21 foreign countries and territories, with the participation of around 3,000 entrepreneurs. Travel businesses of Vietnam and other countries introduced their products at the event. Statistics of 21 travel agencies showed that a total of 29,300 guests booked their package tours worth VND245 billion (US$10.74 million).
