Vietnam finish runners-up at AFC U23 Championship

Vietnam were the runners-up at the AFC U23 Championship after losing 12 -1 after extra-time to Uzbekistan in the final match in Changzhou, China on January 27.

From a corner-kick by Dostonbek Khamdamov, Rustamjon Ashurmatov scored the first goal with a header in the eighth minute. With five official minutes left to go in the first half, Vietnam were awarded a free-kick right outside the penalty box after Cong Phuong was fouled by Dostonbek Tursunov, and midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai scored an equaliser for Vietnam.

However, Andrey Sidorov scored the second goal for Uzbekistan in the last minute of extra time.

With their outstanding performance, U23 Vietnam team received the first class Labour Order; while head coach Park Hang-seo, midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai and goalkeeper Bui Tien Dung were awarded third class Labour Orders.

Prime Minister attends ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his spouse paid an official visit to India from January 24-26 to attend the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit.

At the summit, the Vietnamese PM expressed his satisfaction at the development of the ASEAN-India relations over the past 25 years. He also urged ASEAN and India to strengthen their coordination and respect the law, while focusing on measures to deal with maritime challenges and develop a green sea-based economy.

In addition, he attended a parade to celebrate the 69th anniversary of India's Republic Day as a chief guest of the Indian President Ram Nath Kovind.

During his stay, PM Phuc talked with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi and held bilateral meetings with leaders of Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Indonesia. He also met with leaders of Indian groups.

Vietnam rubber latex processing plant inaugurated in Cambodia

The Vietnam Rubber Group inaugurated its third rubber latex processing plant in Cambodia on January 25. The Chu Se Kampong Thom plant, located in the Kampong Thom province, is one of the biggest rubber latex processing plants in Southeast Asia.

It has a design capacity of 21,500 tonnes annually. The figure is expected to be increased to 45,000 tonnes by 2022.

Dinh La Thang sentenced to 13 years for economic mismanagement

Dinh La Thang has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

The former Politburo member and chairman of the state-owned oil giant PVN Dinh La Thang has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for deliberately violating state regulations on economic management.

Trinh Xuan Thanh, former chairman of PVC, a unit of PVN, was given a life sentence for both economic mismanagement and embezzlement.

Vu Duc Thuan, former general director of PVC, was sentenced to a total of 22 years in prison for the same offences as Thanh.

Other defendants received sentences ranging from 17 months to 16 years in jail.

Australia – Vietnam Mural Village inaugurated

The Vietnam - Australia mural village was officially inaugurated at Tan Tich ward, Cao Lanh city, Dong Thap province.

Hundreds of mural paintings, with images of lotus flowers and tangerine gardens in Dong Thap and Australian symbols such as kangaroos and koala bears, were drawn by 30 artists from Australia and Ho Chi Minh City, as well as students from Dong Thap-based universities.

Vietnam – Japan cultural festival takes place in Ho Chi Minh City

The fifth Vietnam – Japan Cultural Festival was held in Ho Chi Minh City from January 26-28 to celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Themed ‘Holding hands together’, the event introduced famous destinations, food and drinks, pop music pieces and Bon Odori dances from Japan.

Various seminars on the cooperation in the fields of agriculture, education and culture between Vietnam and Japan were also held during the festival.
