APEC year begins with first senior officials’ meeting

The first APEC senior officials’ meeting (SOM1) and related meetings kicked off on February 18 in the central resort city of Nha Trang and will run until March 3. SOM1 includes 56 meetings, workshops and dialogues of 38 committees and working groups in various fields, such as trade and investment liberalisation, business facilitation, climate change adaptation, human resources development, education, fisheries, e-commerce and services.

Deputy PM Minh active at G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Deputy PM Pham Binh Minh and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh attended the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Bonn, Germany where he called for adherence to international law and the promotion of multilateralism for peace and sustainable development. On the sidelines of the event, the deputy PM met with foreign ministers of the US, UK and Brazil.

Vietnam posts trade surplus of US$1.15 billion in January

Vietnam enjoyed a trade surplus of $1.15 billion in January, according to statistics released by the General Department of Vietnamese Customs. Vietnam posted an export revenue of US$14.34 billion in January, a year-on-year increase of 5.7%; meanwhile, the nation’s import revenue was reported at nearly US$13.19 billion, up 3.9% over the same period last year. Vietnam’s trade balance recorded a high surplus in January thanks to contributions from the US, the Netherlands and Japan.

Vietnam’s first breast milk bank opens in Da Nang

A trial breast milk bank, the first of its kind in Vietnam, officially opened at the Maternity and Paediatric Hospital in the central city of Da Nang on February 17. The bank aims to provide breast milk to infants for whom breast milk is not available, as well as to promote the raising of children with breast milk. The presence of the bank will help the community understand that breast milk is an important and precious asset that they should appreciate and save for their children.

LienVietPostBank crowned international women’s volleyball championships

Hosts LienVietPostBank won the 2017 International Women’s Volleyball Championships – LienVietPostBank Cup after defeating VTV Binh Dien Long An 3-1 in the finals on February 18. The champion won the championship trophy and a total cash prize of US$15,000; while the runners-up were awarded US$10,000. The third and fourth place teams Vietinbank and Tien Nong Thanh Hoa received US$6,000 and US$3,000, respectively. The Nanjing University team from China bagged the consolation prize and the team from Thailand was honoured for their fair participation.
