NDO - The first national festival of Dao ethnic culture and the Tuyen Quang City Festival 2017 officially opened in Tuyen Quang city, the northern mountainous province of Tuyen Quang on September 29.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan praised Dao artists and athletes from 12 provinces and cities for gathering in Tuyen Quang with the purpose of honoring the traditional cultural values of the Dao ethnic people.

Ethnic minority culture is a precious heritage, contributing to the richness and diversity of the Vietnamese culture, she said, adding that the maintaining of cultural identity amongst the ethnic minorities in general and the Dao ethnic minority in particular is a very important political task in the period of national sustainable development.

The first national festival of Dao ethnic culture is a practical cultural activity aimed at concretising the Party and State's policies on caring and upholding the spiritual life of the Dao ethnic group, the NA Chairwoman noted.

The top legislator also emphasised that the festival provided a good opportunity to raise the sense of responsibility with the promotion of traditional culture as well as strengthening the solidarity bloc of the entire nation, contributing to maintaining political stability and national security and defence.

The festival, the first of its kind, featured Dao music, costumes and ritual ceremonies, food, and sports, with photo exhibitions and seminars also.

One of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups, the Dao community has an estimated population of 750,000. These groups mostly reside in the northern mountainous provinces such as Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, and Yen Bai. Their main livelihood consists of farming in rocky areas, weaving, and silver craft making.

On this occasion, Tuyen Quang City Festival 2017, which is also known as Tuyen Quang Mid-Autumn Festival will delight visitors with a wide range of art performances which will feature the cultural identity of ethnic minorities in the northern mountainous regions, a mass parade of large beautiful lanterns made by locals, cuisine festivals, a photography festival and a beauty contest.
