Madrid earn Copa del Rey win over Leganes to lift mood

Real Madrid eased their recent troubles by securing a therapeutic 3-0 home win against Leganes in the first leg of their last-16 Copa del Rey tie on Wednesday.

* France striker Antoine Griezmann scored to secure Atletico Madrid a 1-1 draw away to Girona in a chaotic and entertaining Copa del Rey last 16 first-leg match on Wednesday.

* Paris St Germain were knocked out of the French League Cup after unfancied Guingamp scored two of the three penalties they were awarded to book their place in the semi-finals with a 2-1 away victory on Wednesday.

* Holders Manchester City can look forward to defending the League Cup in next month's final at Wembley as Gabriel Jesus struck four goals in a 9-0 thrashing of Burton Albion in their semi-final, first leg on Wednesday (Jan 9).

Media reports in Germany put the transfer at EUR35 million (US$40 million) for the 22-year-old who can play at right-back or centre-back.

* Bayern Munich, who are targeting young talent in the current transfer window, have confirmed their strong interest in English teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi amid reports the defending German champions have agreed a fee with Chelsea.

* AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain has “agreed terms” and is set for an imminent move to Premier League club Chelsea, Italian sports daily Gazzetta Dello Sport reported on Wednesday (Jan 9).

* Stoke City have appointed Luton Town coach Nathan Jones as their new manager after the sacking of Gary Rowett, the Championship club (tier-two) said on Wednesday. Jones led Luton to promotion from the fourth division last season and the club are in the hunt to go up again this year, sitting second in League One.

* Former South Africa international all-rounder Albie Morkel has decided to retire from all forms of cricket, ending a two-decade career that earned him a reputation as a clean striker of the ball and a bowler full of guile.

* Former Hull KR rugby league player Thomas Minns has been banned for 16 months after testing positive for cocaine, UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) said on Wednesday. Centre Minns was placed on extended leave by Hull after testing positive for benzoylecgonine following their Super League win at Huddersfield Giants last year.

* Sri Lankan cricketers have been granted a 15-day amnesty to report previously undisclosed information relating to corruption in the sport, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Wednesday.
