Brazilian Paulinho returns to China's Guangzhou

Brazil midfielder Paulinho is leaving Barcelona after one season to rejoin Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande, the Spanish champions said on Sunday.

Paulinho, 29, scored nine goals in 49 appearances for the Catalans after signing for 40 million euros (US$47 million) last August, helping them win the La Liga and King’s Cup double.

* Spain’s interim coach Fernando Hierro has cut his ties with the Spanish Football Federation following the team’s disastrous exit from the World Cup last week, the organisation said on Sunday. Hierro was named sporting director for the second time in 2017 but was unexpectedly catapulted into the role of national team coach the day before the World Cup began when Julen Lopetegui was sacked after agreeing to join Real Madrid.

* A year after being kicked out of the Tour de France, world champion Peter Sagan was back with a bang as he claimed victory in the second stage to take the overall leader’s yellow jersey on Sunday. The Slovak was thrown out after the fourth stage 12 months ago for sending Mark Cavendish crashing in a chaotic sprint, but he won it clean this time to beat Italian Sonny Colbrelli and France’s Arnaud Demare into second and third places.

* Sebastian Vettel won a thrilling British Grand Prix for Ferrari on Sunday to deny Lewis Hamilton a fifth successive home victory and move eight points clear at the top of the Formula One standings. In a race with two late safety car periods, reigning champion Hamilton went from pole position to the rear of the field before finishing second for Mercedes in a superb fightback.

* Confederation of African Football (CAF) has now banned disgraced Kenyan referee Aden Marwa from all football activities for life. The Kenyan referee, who was kicked out of Russia World Cup in June after he was caught on camera taking a bribe while on CAF assignment in Ghana, will not be allowed to take part in any football related activities for the rest of his life.
