The information was announced by the organising committee at a press conference held at Nhan Dan Newspaper’s headquarters in Hanoi on May 10.

The six-day tournament is part of activities to mark the 128th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s birthday (May 19, 1890-2018), while seeking to promote the table tennis movement nationwide.

Addressing the press briefing, Phan Huy Hien, Deputy Editor-in-chief of Nhan Dan newspaper and head of the steering committee for the tournament, stated that the annual event offers a good chance for players to sharpen their skills, contributing to discovering the promising talents for the national teams, in preparation for future international and regional competitions.

This year’s tournament takes place as Vietnamese table tennis has been flourishing with the men’s team title claimed at the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia last year and a second-place finish in the division three competition of the recent 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships, Hien said.

Phan Huy Hien, Deputy Editor-in-chief of Nhan Dan newspaper and head of the steering committee for the tournament, speaking at the press briefing.

He added that the recently gained achievements would be a source of encouragement for the players to perform their best at the upcoming National Championships, thus opening up their opportunities to attend the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia this August.

The competitors will be vying for seven sets of medals in the men’s and women’s singles, doubles and team events, and the mixed doubles category. In addition, the organising committee will present prizes to the best young male and female players, the miss beauty of the tournament, and the localities which have actively developed the grassroots table tennis movements.

The tournament is expected to entertain fans with exciting matches between most of Vietnam’s leading players in the sport, including Dinh Quang Linh, Mai Hoang My Trang, Nguyen Anh Tu, and Tran Tuan Quynh, alongside many other potential young faces.

The draw for the tournament will be held on May 20, two days before competition commences.

At last year’s event, Dinh Quang Linh from the Army team defeated Nguyen Anh Tu from Hanoi 4-1 in the final match to claim the men’s singles title, while Mai Hoang My Trang from Ho Chi Minh City Petrosetco successfully defended her women’s singles crown after defeating Nguyen Khoa Dieu Khanh from T&T Hanoi.
